The Sulphur Head Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara maylandi) is a striking species of peacock cichlid from Lake Malawi. Known for its vibrant colors and relatively peaceful nature, it is popular among cichlid enthusiasts. Here's an overview of its characteristics, care requirements, and other important details:
Key Characteristics:
- Coloration: Males are easily recognized by their stunning coloration. They have a vibrant blue body with a bright yellow or "sulphur" stripe running from the top of their head, down the dorsal fin, and often toward the tail. This bold contrast makes them one of the most eye-catching of the peacock cichlids. Females, on the other hand, are much less colorful, typically appearing duller in comparison.
- Body Shape: Typical of the Aulonocara species, the Sulphur Head Peacock has an elongated body with a streamlined appearance. The fins are well-developed, especially in males.
- Size: Males can grow up to 12-15 cm (5-6 inches), while females are slightly smaller, usually around 8-10 cm (3-4 inches).
Care Requirements:
- Diet: These cichlids are omnivorous but prefer protein-rich diets. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates and microorganisms found in the substrate. In the aquarium, they do well on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Avoid overfeeding to prevent health issues.
- Aquarium Setup: They thrive in tanks with plenty of open swimming space and rocky areas that mimic their natural habitat in Lake Malawi. Providing caves and crevices allows them to hide and establish territories.
-
Water Conditions:
- pH: 7.8 – 8.6 (Alkaline)
- Temperature: 24-28°C (Tropical)
- Water Type: Hard water is preferable to match their natural environment in Lake Malawi.
- Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a single male and a few females. A larger tank is advisable if keeping multiple males to reduce territorial aggression.
- Filtration: Clean water is essential for peacock cichlids. Use a strong filter to maintain good water quality and perform regular water changes to keep nitrate levels low.
Temperament and Compatibility:
- Temperament: The Sulphur Head Peacock is relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids, though males can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are not as aggressive as Mbuna cichlids but can show some dominance behavior, particularly toward other males.
- Tank Mates: They do best when housed with other peaceful or moderately aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi, such as other Aulonocara species or Haps. Avoid keeping them with highly aggressive species like Mbunas, as these can outcompete them for space and resources.
Breeding:
- Mouthbrooder: Like other peacock cichlids, the Sulphur Head Peacock is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female carries the fertilized eggs in her mouth for about 3-4 weeks until the fry are ready to be released.
- Sexual Differences: Males are significantly more colorful than females, with their distinctive sulphur-yellow head stripe. Females are typically smaller, more muted in color, and lack the bright yellow markings.
- Breeding Setup: A rocky environment with hiding spots is essential for breeding. Multiple females per male are recommended to prevent the male from harassing any single female too much. The fry can be raised on crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp once released.
Lifespan:
Sulphur Head Peacock Cichlids can live for up to 8-10 years with proper care in an aquarium setting.
With their peaceful nature and stunning colors, the Sulphur Head Peacock Cichlid makes a wonderful addition to a well-maintained African cichlid tank.
