The Red Neck Peacock Cichlid is a stunning color variant of the Peacock Cichlids, belonging to the Aulonocara genus. These fish are known for their vibrant colors and peaceful temperament, making them a popular choice in cichlid aquariums. The "Red Neck" variety is distinguished by its striking red coloration around the throat and chest area, contrasting beautifully with the blues and purples often seen in their body.

Key Characteristics:

  • Coloration: The Red Neck Peacock Cichlid has a brilliant red throat and chest, with the rest of its body usually showcasing shades of blue, purple, and iridescent hues. The intensity of the colors can vary depending on the individual and water conditions.
  • Body Shape: Like other Peacocks, they have an elongated body with slightly compressed sides, giving them a streamlined appearance.
  • Fins: Their fins are generally long and flowing, with the dorsal fin extending almost the entire length of their back. The anal and caudal fins are often vividly colored and may display spots or other patterns.
  • Size: Males typically grow larger than females, reaching up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length, while females tend to be slightly smaller.

Care Requirements:

  • Diet: Red Neck Peacocks are omnivores. In the aquarium, they should be fed a high-quality diet of cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Avoid overfeeding as these fish are prone to bloating.
  • Aquarium Setup: They thrive in aquariums with plenty of rocks and hiding places, mimicking their natural habitat in Lake Malawi. Open swimming spaces are also essential.
  • Water Conditions:
    • pH: 7.5 – 8.5 (Alkaline)
    • Temperature: 24-28°C (Tropical)
    • Water Type: Hard water is ideal, as it mimics their natural lake environment.
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a small group of Red Neck Peacocks. These cichlids require ample space for swimming and establishing territories.
  • Filtration: Strong filtration is needed to maintain water quality, as cichlids can produce a fair amount of waste. Regular water changes are also essential to keep them healthy.

Temperament and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Red Neck Peacocks are relatively peaceful compared to other cichlids but may show mild aggression, especially during breeding or when establishing territories.
  • Tank Mates: They can be kept with other peaceful to semi-aggressive African cichlids from Lake Malawi, including other Peacock species and Mbuna, as long as the tank is large enough and well-decorated to break up sightlines. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species like some Mbuna or large predatory cichlids.

Breeding:

  • Mouthbrooder: Like other Aulonocara species, the Red Neck Peacock is a mouthbrooder. Females hold the fertilized eggs in their mouth for around 21-28 days until the fry are ready to be released.
  • Sexual Differences: Males are more vibrantly colored, with larger and more elaborate fins. Females tend to be duller in color and smaller in size.

Lifespan:

With proper care, Red Neck Peacock Cichlids can live for 8 to 10 years, making them a rewarding species for dedicated aquarists.
