The Jacobfreibergi Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara jacobfreibergi) is one of the most visually stunning cichlids from Lake Malawi in East Africa. Known for its striking coloration and relatively peaceful temperament, it is highly popular among African cichlid enthusiasts. Here's an overview of its characteristics and care requirements:
Key Characteristics:
- Coloration: Males of the Jacobfreibergi species are known for their vibrant coloration. They usually have a combination of bright blue, orange, red, and purple hues. The dorsal fin often features a bright orange or red margin, while the body showcases various metallic blue and purple tones. Females, in contrast, are much less colorful, appearing mostly gray or brown with faint markings.
- Body Shape: Like other peacocks, Jacobfreibergi have an elongated and somewhat laterally compressed body. They have large, well-developed fins, with males having more extended and pointed fin tips.
- Size: Males typically grow up to 12-15 cm (5-6 inches), while females are smaller, around 9-10 cm (3.5-4 inches).
Care Requirements:
- Diet: These cichlids are omnivorous, with a preference for protein-rich diets. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates found in the substrate. In captivity, they thrive on a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake diet, along with occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia.
- Aquarium Setup: Jacobfreibergi cichlids prefer tanks with plenty of open swimming space and rocky caves that mimic their natural habitat in Lake Malawi. A rocky substrate with crevices and hiding places helps them establish territories and feel secure.
-
Water Conditions:
- pH: 7.8 – 8.6 (Alkaline)
- Temperature: 24-28°C (Tropical)
- Water Type: Hard, to replicate the conditions of Lake Malawi.
- Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a male with several females. Larger tanks are preferable if you plan to keep multiple males or other cichlid species.
- Filtration: Strong filtration is essential to maintain excellent water quality. Frequent water changes are also necessary to keep nitrate levels low.
Temperament and Compatibility:
- Temperament: Compared to many other African cichlids, Jacobfreibergi peacocks are relatively peaceful. However, males can become territorial, especially during breeding. Males will defend their territories but are less aggressive than species like Mbuna cichlids.
- Tank Mates: They are best kept with other peaceful or moderately aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi, such as other Aulonocara species or Haps. Avoid highly aggressive cichlids, as they can outcompete Jacobfreibergi for space and food.
Breeding:
- Mouthbrooder: Jacobfreibergi cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. The female will hold the fertilized eggs in her mouth for about 21-28 days, protecting the fry until they are free-swimming.
- Sexual Differences: Males are highly colorful, while females remain dull in comparison. Males also tend to be larger, with more pronounced and elongated fins.
- Breeding Setup: A rocky environment with plenty of hiding spots is ideal for breeding. Males can be polygamous, so having multiple females per male is recommended to prevent excessive harassment of any single female. Once the fry are released, they can be fed crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.
Lifespan:
Jacobfreibergi cichlids can live up to 7-10 years in a well-maintained aquarium.
With their vibrant colors and relatively peaceful nature, the Jacobfreibergi Peacock Cichlid is a fantastic choice for a well-maintained African cichlid tank.
