Description:
The Black Ranchu is a fancy goldfish known for its distinctive rounded, egg-shaped body, absence of a dorsal fin, and prominent head growth (wen). The body is entirely black, giving it a striking appearance compared to the more common orange and white varieties. It has a broad back, a short tail, and its head growth develops over time as it matures, giving it a lion-like face, which is why Ranchus are sometimes called "Lionhead Goldfish."
Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 liters (20 gallons) is recommended for one Black Ranchu. Larger tanks are preferred as they produce less waste in relation to water volume, making water quality easier to maintain.
- Filtration: Black Ranchus produce a lot of waste, so a strong filtration system is necessary. Ensure the water flow is not too strong, as Ranchus are slow swimmers and can struggle with strong currents.
- Substrate: Soft sand or smooth gravel is ideal to avoid injury, as Ranchus tend to forage at the bottom of the tank.
- Temperature: While they can tolerate a range of temperatures, they prefer cool water environments typical of goldfish. Ensure temperatures remain stable to avoid stress.
Temperament:
Black Ranchus are peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks with other slow-moving, cold-water species. Avoid pairing them with faster, more aggressive fish, as Ranchus are not strong swimmers and may struggle to compete for food.
Diet:
As omnivores, Black Ranchus should be fed a balanced diet that includes high-quality goldfish pellets or flakes, as well as vegetable matter like blanched spinach, peas, or lettuce. Occasional protein-rich treats such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia can be offered, but avoid overfeeding as they are prone to digestive issues.
The Black Ranchu is a visually stunning and peaceful fancy goldfish variety that makes an elegant addition to any aquarium, but it requires proper care and attention due to its delicate nature and specific needs.
