The Butterfly Telescope Goldfish is a distinctive and captivating variety of fancy goldfish known for its unique eye shape and tail. Here's a detailed look:

  • Appearance: Butterfly Telescope Goldfish have protruding, telescope-like eyes, giving them a wide range of vision. Their tail, which spreads out like a butterfly’s wings when viewed from above, is one of their most unique features. They come in various colors, including orange, red, black, calico, and even panda patterns with black and white.

  • Tank Requirements: Due to their delicate eyes and sensitive nature, Butterfly Telescope Goldfish do best in tanks with soft, smooth substrates and minimal sharp objects. A minimum 20-gallon tank is recommended per fish, with extra space for additional goldfish.

  • Diet: These goldfish are omnivores, thriving on a balanced diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

  • Care Level: Moderate. Their delicate eyes make them prone to injury, so careful tank setup and maintenance are essential. They’re also sensitive to water quality changes, so regular water changes and tank cleaning are crucial.

  • Behavior: Butterfly Telescope Goldfish are generally peaceful, social fish that do well with other fancy goldfish varieties. Due to their slower swimming speed, they may struggle to compete for food with more agile tankmates.

  • Lifespan: With good care, they can live 10–15 years, sometimes longer.

These beautiful, delicate fish require a bit more attention, especially with tank setup, to avoid eye injuries, but their striking appearance makes them a popular choice among goldfish enthusiasts

Keeping Goldfish FAQ

Water changes?
About 20% weekly. Don't clean the tank otherwise, other than optionally scraping the walls or vacuuming the substrate every so often.

Tank size?
At least 4-6x the length of the fish is ideal, but the bigger the better. Eventually, these should end up in a pond but not everyone has that option.

Feeding?
Once per day is enough, any standard fish food. Note, that they will eat algae and some plants as well. Duckweed is a great snack to keep them healthy as well.

Tank mates?
Don't keep them with shrimp! Anything they can fit in their mouth they will have a go at, but otherwise won't usually be too aggressive to other fish.
