The Gold Gourami, native to Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam, thrives in acidic water commonly found in lowland swamps adjacent to the sea.

This stunning variant of the Three Spot Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus), previously known as Trichogaster trichopterus, boasts an attractive golden hue with distinctive striped patterning along its back, though it lacks the two dark spots characteristic of its parentage. Renowned for its vibrant coloration, the Gold Gourami adds a captivating allure to any aquarium setting. In its natural habitat, Three Spot Gouramis inhabit various lowland wetlands, including marshes, swamps, and peatlands, as well as flowing streams and canals, favoring shallow, vegetated waters. Omnivorous by nature, they consume a diet comprising crustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton.

Notably resilient, Gold Gouramis are an excellent choice for novice hobbyists embarking on their aquatic journey. With individual personalities and a keen awareness of their surroundings, these fish exhibit remarkable adaptability. While generally considered peaceful community fish when young, their temperament may shift as they mature, with some becoming territorial or aggressive toward smaller tankmates. Males, in particular, exhibit territorial behavior and may engage in occasional squabbles. Ideally, tankmates should be of similar size and disposition to foster a harmonious environment.

Capable of reaching lengths of up to 15 cm, though typically smaller in aquarium settings (approximately 12 cm), Gold Gouramis require adequate space to thrive. Juveniles can be accommodated in a 60 - 80-liter tank initially, but as they grow, a larger tank of at least 150 liters becomes necessary. Tank décor should incorporate densely planted areas and floating plants to provide both shelter and shadowy retreats.

Gold Gouramis exhibit omnivorous feeding habits and readily consume a variety of live, fresh, and flake foods. A balanced diet should consist of quality flake or pellet foods supplemented with bloodworms, brine shrimp, or fresh vegetables like blanched lettuce. Feeding once or twice daily is recommended for optimal health.
