The Flame Dwarf Gourami is known for its peaceful and reserved demeanor, often swimming in pairs. As labyrinth fish, they breathe air through a specialized organ and require access to the water's surface.

Native to India, West Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh, Flame Dwarf Gouramis thrive in densely vegetated waters. Despite the name "dwarf," they grow to a maximum of two inches. Males, slightly larger, showcase a predominantly blue hue with minimal red on the body, featuring pointed dorsal fins. Females maintain a duller silvery blue-gray color, lacking the vivid colors of males. The Flame Dwarf Gourami is almost entirely red, differing from the color hybrid Dwarf Gourami, which has an orange-red body with turquoise blue vertical stripes extending into the fins. Another hybrid is the Coral Blue Dwarf Gourami, predominantly blue with minimal red.

Typically peaceful, Flame Dwarf Gouramis can coexist with other non-aggressive species, favoring peaceful, small schooling fish and most bottom-dwelling species. They may become aggressive towards brightly colored fish, perceiving them as rivals. Suitable tankmates include dwarf cichlids and small tetras.

These gouramis may be skittish in noisy environments, requiring a quiet setting with ample vegetation, including floating plants covering part of the water's surface. They thrive in a neutral pH range, with water hardness between 4 to 10 dGH, and an ideal temperature around 25°C.

In their natural habitat, gouramis feed on small insects, larvae, and algae. In aquariums, they readily consume flake food, freeze-dried options, frozen foods, and vegetable tablets. To maintain good health, supplement their diet with periodic live feedings such as worms, especially for breeding pairs.

Males, larger and more vividly colored, develop elongated dorsal and anal fins as they mature, while females have shorter, rounded fins.
