This listing is for one Black Shrimp.
For larger orders I will make sure to include a mix of both male, female, juvenile and adult Cherries.
Black Shrimp are popular in aquariums due to their deep color and algae-eating habits. They’re often of the Neocaridina davidi species, known for being hardy and adaptable. Here’s a guide to caring for Black Shrimp:
-
Appearance: Black Shrimp are a deep, striking black color, with variations like the Black Diamond or Black Sakura lines having especially intense pigment. Some have a subtle shimmer, while others are solid matte black.
-
Size: They typically grow to about 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm), making them a great fit for both nano and larger aquariums.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 65°F – 80°F (18°C – 27°C), though mid-70s is ideal.
- pH: 6.5 – 7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
-
Diet: Black Shrimp are omnivorous and primarily feed on biofilm, algae, and detritus. Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and algae wafers. They’ll also appreciate occasional protein, such as bloodworms, but it should be minimal.
-
Tank Setup: A well-planted tank with driftwood and mosses creates an ideal habitat, as these offer surfaces for biofilm growth and hiding spots. Shrimp thrive with gentle filtration that provides water movement without creating strong currents.
-
Compatibility: Black Shrimp are peaceful and can coexist with other small, non-aggressive fish and shrimp species. However, they may become food for larger or predatory fish.
-
Breeding: Black Shrimp breed readily in stable conditions. They carry their eggs under their swimmerets (the small limbs under their tail) until they hatch. Ensuring plenty of hiding places increases fry survival rates.
-
Care Level: Easy to moderate. They’re relatively hardy, but stable water parameters are key for their health.
-
Lifespan: With proper care, they live around 1–2 years.
Black Shrimp are low-maintenance, help with algae control, and add a unique, elegant touch to any freshwater aquarium.
The Neocaridina family being one of the hardiest dwarf shrimp out there, they can survive temperatures as low as 18C up to 30C but thrive and breed readily between 21 and 25 Degrees.

Keeping with fish
The general rule for all aquatic life is "if it fits in their mouth they will eat it." Unless you have specifically passive or vegetarian fish, shrimp may be eaten by any fish which is large enough to swallow one hole. Adult shrimp grow to 2cm in length, with juveniles being at least 1cm. Conversely, any smaller fish will live with them very happily. They may eat the baby shrimp if they breed, but if you have enough plant cover, usually enough survive to keep the colony going.
